Combatting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. On 20 December 2012 the United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution banning this practice. The FGM resolution urges countries to take all necessary measures, including enforcing legislation, raising awareness and allocating sufficient resources to protect women and girls from this form of violence.

Excision, parlons-en ! is an NGO whose aim is to intensify mobilisation to abandon Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in France and worldwide. The project consists in bringing together the knowledge of experts in combatting FGM, improving the understanding of the practice in France and abroad by spreading a regular information and fostering the commitment of international and national institutions.
On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation on February 6, the Kering Foundation supported the international symposium entitled “Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: the challenge of abandoning” organised by Excision parlons-en! The initiative gathered specialists of FGM in the fields of health, law or social sciences to work on crossed solutions to end the practice. French Minister for Women’s Rights Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, Claudia Cappa, author of Unicef statistical report on FGM or Khalidou Sy, National Coordinator of the NGO Tostan in Senegal were some of the invited speakers
From February 2013, Excision, parlons-en! regularly organised working committees with experts in this topic. By February 2015, the NGO will organise dedicated conferences and will continue to expand the world cartography of FGM practices on its website.

On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation on 6 February 2015, excision parlons-en organized a panel discussion followed by the signature of a charter at the National Assembly in Paris attended by Mr. Sébastien Denaja  and Mrs. Catherine Coutelle, both Member of Parliament.
